Red Sox trade 3 prospects, including 22-year-old from Rafael Devers deal

The Red Sox traded three prospects in total to acquire starter Dustin May and reliever Steven Matz before Thursday’s 6 p.m. trade deadline.

They sent outfield prospects James Tibbs III and Zach Ehrhard to the Dodgers in a last-minute deal for May.

They dealt corner infield prospect Blaze Jordan to the Cardinals for Matz on Wednesday night.

“We obviously didn’t get to know James Tibbs as well as Blaze and Zach but feel like they are really good baseball players,” Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said. “They are going to go on to have successful careers. Each does something that we like whether it’s James’ contact. Zach has started to hit ball pretty hard, really good defender in the outfield. Blaze obviously has been performing really, really well in Triple A this year.

“But you have to be willing to give up good players in order to execute deals. We obviously have found that out and we’re willing to do so. But felt like the additions of Matz and May were worthwhile just given the position of our major league team right now.”

James Tibbs III

Boston initially acquired Tibbs on June 15 from the Giants for Rafael Devers. In his brief time in the Red Sox system, the 22-year-old Tibbs batted .207 with a .319 on-base percentage, .267 slugging percentage, .586 OPS, one homer, two doubles, one triple, seven RBIs, 16 runs, 19 walks and 39 strikeouts in 30 games (138 plate appearances) for Double-A Portland.

Tibbs was ranked as Boston’s No. 10 overall prospect by Baseball America and No. 5 by MLB Pipeline.

The Giants selected him 13th overall in the 2024 draft out of Florida State.

He made 17 starts in right field, five starts in left field and five starts at first base for Portland. Boston acquired him along with Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison and Jose Bello.

Zach Ehrhard

MLB Pipeline ranked the 22-year-old right-handed hitter the No. 27 prospect in Boston’s system. Baseball America had him No. 29.

The Red Sox actually drafted Ehrhard twice. They took him in the fourth round in 2024 out of Oklahoma State. They also picked him in the 13th round out of Paul R. Wharton High in Tampa, Fla., in 2021 but he instead kept his college commitment.

He batted .267 with a .367 on-base percentage, .429 slugging percentage, .796 OPS, nine homers, 23 doubles, one triple, 45 RBIs, 53 runs, 46 walks, 76 strikeouts and 23 steals in 89 games (377 plate appearances) between High-A Greenville and Double-A Portland.

He made starts at all three outfield positions. His 26-year-old brother Drew is also in the Red Sox organization, and the two were teammates at Portland.

Blaze Jordan

The 22-year-old first baseman/third baseman began the year at Double-A Portland where he batted .320 with a .415 on-base percentage, .513 slugging percentage, .928 OPS, six home runs, 11 doubles, 37 RBIs, 30 runs, 22 walks and 19 strikeouts in 44 games (176 plate appearances).

He received a promotion June 1 to Triple-A Worcester where he posted a .298/.341/.480/.821 line with six home runs, 11 doubles, one triple, 25 RBIs, 29 runs, 11 walks and 19 strikeouts in 44 games (182 plate appearances).

Baseball America ranked Jordan Boston’s No. 24 prospect.

MLB Pipeline already slotted Jordan in as the Cardinals’ No. 19 prospect.

Boston drafted him in the third round (89th overall) in 2020. He received a $1.75 million signing bonus.
