Illinois Adds Petrovic – University of Illinois Athletics

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Fighting Illini head coach Brad Underwood announced Thursday that Mihailo Petrovic has signed a Big Ten Athletics Aid Agreement with the University of Illinois.

Petrovic is a 6-foot-3-inch, 180-pound point guard from Prokuplje, Serbia. He joins the Fighting Illini after competing at both youth and top-tier levels for five clubs in his home country over the last five season. Petrovic most recently starred for KK Mega Basket in the Adriatic League (ABA) First Division, a club that previously produced NBA superstar Nikola Jokic. Petrovic has also earned valuable experience as a member of the Serbian National Team at both the youth and senior levels.

“Mihailo is the consummate point guard,” Underwood said. “He has a great understanding of how the game is played. He has tremendous speed, and, being a little bit older, also has a physicality about him which we like and is needed in the Big Ten. He excels in ball screens and has all the finishes; that is a big part of his game. Mihailo has been a prolific scorer at times, or a great facilitator when needed; he takes what the game gives him. We are excited to add someone with his talent, experience, and maturity to our backcourt.”

In 30 games this past season for KK Mega Basket in the ABA and Serbian RK Cup, Petrovic averaged 14.2 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 7.3 assists while playing 27.1 minutes per game and shooting better than 49% from the field, including 33% from beyond the arc. He recorded seven points-assists double-doubles on the season.

Petrovic joined KK Mega Basket after one season in the Basketball League of Serbia (KLS) for OKK Beograde where he led the team with averages of 21.2 points and 6.8 assists in a team-most 31.8 minutes per contest. He also shot 50% from the field, including 29% from 3-point range, and hit 70% from the free throw line.

In 2022-23, Petrovic averaged 20.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.6 assists in more than 31 minutes per contest across five KLS games for KK Dunav. That same season, he made his ABA debut for KK Borac Cacak and averaged 3.4 points and 1.4 assists in a reserve role over seven contests.

Representing his native Serbia in FIBA competition, Petrovic has played in a combined 20 career games at the 2023 U20 European Championship, the 2021 U19 World Cup, and the 2019 U16 European Championship. At the 2023 U20 European Championship, he averaged 14.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists in seven games. At the senior level, Petrovic made his Serbian National Team debut at the 2025 FIBA Eurobasket Qualifiers where he scored four points in 10 minutes to help his team to a 72-52 victory over Denmark as part of a 6-0 showing in the group stage.

Petrovic developed as a youth player with his hometown club, KK Probasket Prokuplje, then joined KK Partizan in 2019. He played 13 games with KK Partizan’s U18 team from 2019-21 and combined to average 9.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists.
