Rumor: iPhone 17 Pro will zoom past 5x optically, have Pro camera app

Here’s a wild iPhone 17 Pro rumor for you! According to a tipster cited by MacRumors, the iPhone 17 Pro could have an 8x optical zoom camera, a new Pro camera app, and even a second, physical Camera Control button.

The tipster is reportedly familiar with a promo film for Apple for the launch of the iPhone 17 Pro. So a level of skepticism is needed here.

According to the tipster, the iPhone 17 Pro will employ a new zoom module with a physically-moving lens, which can go to different lengths. So it’s either a Sony Xperia 1-like continuous zoom camera, or a Huawei Pura 80 Ultra two-focal-length zoom module. That will allow the iPhone 17 Pro to move past the 5x furthest zoom of the current iPhone 16 Pro.

The next part of the rumor is a new Pro camera app that will launch alongside the new iPhone 17 Pro. It will reportedly be able to compete with staples such as Halide, Kino, and Filmic Pro. This ties in nicely with previous reports that Apple will boost the video-taking capabilities of its iPhone 17 models.

The 8x optically-zooming camera was wild enough, but what comes next is wilder still. Per the report, the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max could end up adding a second, physical camera control button on the top edge of the devices. It will reportedly work to complement the existing Camera Control button on the bottom part of the right edge of the phones.

Finally, the tipster reportedly corroborated existing rumors of a centered Apple logo and a new copper-like color option.
