Ella Beatty As Lizzie Borden; Rebecca Hall & Vicky Krieps

EXCLUSIVE: Ella Beatty (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans) is set to play the lead in the fourth installment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s Monster true-crime franchise for Netflix. She landed the role after an extensive multi-country casting search. Rebecca Hall (Godzilla vs. Kong, The Studio) and Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Das Boot) will also star in the new season, which will tell the story of Lizzie Borden who was tried and acquitted of the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, MA.

Beatty will portray Borden, with Hall said to be portraying her stepmother and Krieps believed to be playing a maid. Max Winkler is set to direct the pilot episode.

All four already are in the Ryan Murphy universe. Beatty, whose parents are Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, made her screen acting debut with a recurring role on FX’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. Hall stars in Murphy’s upcoming FX series The Beauty, and Krieps is in the upcoming third Monster installment starring Charlie Hunnam as Ed Gein. Winkler has directed for the Feud, Monster and American Horror Story franchises as well as Netflix’s The Watcher. He also is helming the pilot episode for FX’s upcoming American Love Story.

Lizzie Borden gained notoriety after the murders and her trial received extensive nationwide publicity in the U.S. and has remained part of American popular culture in the decades since. She has been depicted in numerous film, television and theater adaptations, most recently in Lifetime’s The Lizzie Borden Chronicles starring Christina Ricci as Borden, and the 2018 feature film Lizzie starring Chloë Sevigny as the title character and Kristen Stewart as a maid.

The Monster franchise launched with Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which remains a Top 5 most popular Netflix English-language series of all time. It was followed by The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

Beatty is making her feature acting debut in the upcoming comedy drama anthology film If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. A 2022 Juilliard graduate, she made her Broadway debut with Appropriate, succeeding Elle Fanning in the role. She subsequently starred opposite Billy Crudup and Lily Rabe in Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts and opposite Hugh Jackman in Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes. She is repped by CAA and Entertainment 360.

English actress Hall will next be seen in movies Ella McCay and Onslaught. She is repped by WME, UK’s Julian Belfrage Associates and Hansen Jacobson Teller. Luxembourgish-German actress Krieps will also be seen on the comedy-drama anthology film Father Mother Sister Brother. She is repped by CAA and UK’s United Agents.
