The US Coast Guard has confirmed with KSBW 8 that three bodies have been recovered off the coast of Pacific Grove following a confirmed private plane crash on Saturday night.The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office has identified the deceased as 60-year-old Steve Clatterbuck of Salinas, 36-year-old James Vincent of Monterey, and 44-year-old Jamie Tabscott of Monterey.The community in Pacific Grove is devastated, now knowing the passengers were locals.A twin-engine Beechcraft, tail number N8796R, departed from San Carlos Airport in the Bay Area at approximately 10:07 p.m., heading to Monterey Regional Airport. However, around 10:38 p.m., the aircraft crashed into the ocean 200-300 yards off Point Pinos near Sunset Drive and Jewell Avenue. Witnesses described hearing the aircraft engine loudly revving, followed by a loud splash.”I was going to sleep and heard this loud engine grumbling. Sounded like a Cessna, but it was really low and loud. It kind of felt like it was over the house, and there was a pop,” said Brian Mitchell, who was visiting his father-in-law from Sacramento.Emergency responders were alerted at 10:37 p.m. following a lost radar alert and 911 calls from nearby residents. Coast Guard Station Monterey dispatched a 29-foot response boat, which arrived at the crash site within 15 minutes, while an Air Station San Francisco MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew also joined the search.At 3 a.m. Sunday, the Monterey Fire Boat 12 located the first victim unresponsive in the water. By early morning, the fuselage was located using a CAL FIRE drone, and two additional victims were recovered by a commercial dive team. The Monterey Fire Department, Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, Pacific Grove Police, the US Coast Guard, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and CAL FIRE are responding to the incident near Asilomar. Aircraft debris washed up on shore hours after the crash. Community Emergency Response Team is at the scene waiting for the National Transportation Safety Board.
