As Tabor gets a handle on how his players will attack the dynamic kickoff, he’s also evaluating several position battles. One of those is at punter. Punters Brad Robbins and Jake Camarda were the two punters on the roster ahead of training camp, but Camarda got released right before camp started due to roster numbers.
Even though Robbins is the only punter on the roster right now, Tabor says the job is still open.
“That’s kind of the world that we’re in with the 90 and injuries and those types of things,” Tabor said of the release. “It’s still competition. Brad has not won this job, he’s still competing, he understands that. You never know if Jake comes back, and Jake needs to be ready. And he will, he’s a good pro. They both did a really nice job in the spring and it’s always tough to make those decisions, but I like both of them.”
Tabor calls Robbins a steady football player who knows his swing.
“I think he does a nice job with his direction and hang,” Tabor shared. “He had a nice day the other day, and hopefully he can continue to build on those things.”
Another competition going on is for the returner spot. Returner and cornerback Brandon Codrington won the job last year and is one of the several players competing for it again. Codrington returned 27 punts for 313 yards and 11 kickoffs for 306 yards in 2024.
Tabor said it’s not an easy job choosing a return man when there are so many players fighting for one spot.
“It’s always hard,” Tabor explained. “I think as a special teams coach, you’re reading the tea leaves. Our goal is I want them to make our team. If they don’t make our team, I want them to make somebody else’s team. And that’s what we’re working towards.”
