When you think of famous wrestlers, Hulk Hogan is one of the first that comes to mind. His legacy in the ring can only be matched by a few others, like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and The Undertaker.

Unfortunately, the wrestling universe lost Hogan this past Thursday. The authorities responded to a call about the WWE Hall of Famer going into cardiac arrest at his home in Clearwater, Florida. He was 71 years old.

While countless wrestlers and fans posted tributes for Hogan this week, ESPN’s David Dennis Jr. went with a different approach. He wrote an article for Andscape that details Hogan’s life outside of the ring.

Dennis grabbed plenty of people’s attention with his article about the WWE legend. That’s because he said Hogan’s wrestling career is “no match” for the racism he displayed over the course of his life.

“Because Hulk Hogan is a self-admitted racist who was caught on tape using the N-word freely on multiple occasions and also dreading the idea that his son’s arrest could mean that the two could be reincarnated as Black men,” Dennis wrote. “When that is part of your legacy, it becomes singularly defining. As a result, Hulk Hogan died being known a racist who also became famous as a professional wrestler. He only has himself to blame for that.”

Dennis added, “When you are a racist that is your legacy above all else. It’s not complicated.”

Some people praised Dennis for his column on Hogan. Others, however, thought it was incredibly insensitive.

“David, it’s not complicated. You’re just a loser. That’s what everyone thinks of you,” one person replied.

“Posting this while Hulk Hogan’s body was still warm tells us everything we need to know about you,” a second person said.

“EVERYONE’S legacy is complicated, including yours. What if we were all judged by the single worst thing we had ever done or said? The world would certainly look like a much different place. Be a little more introspective in your life and less judgmental,” a social media user commented.

“It’s also not complicated that you make a living off race baiting which is truly pathetic,” another social media user wrote.

The WWE is just a week away from SummerSlam at MetLife Stadium. It’ll be interesting to see if they have a tribute lined up for Hogan.

In the meantime, our thoughts are with Hogan’s loved ones.
