An increasing amount of developers and publishers are dropping support for PS4, and it seems that PS5 players couldn’t be happier. As blockbuster games like Call of Duty continue to support last-gen platforms, it looks like Battlefield 6 will finally be ditching PS4.
Did PS4 support really hold back games on the PS5?
Yesterday, EA lifted the curtains on Battlefield 6. Although we’ve only been treated to a cinematic trailer for now (multiplayer reveal coming July 31), reports suggest that the game won’t be on PS4 and Xbox One.
EA has yet to confirm the reports and Battlefield 6’s PS Store page doesn’t list any platforms, but if true, we certainly won’t be surprised. EA’s Madden NFL 26 — one of its biggest games of the year — will also be skipping last-gen consoles for the first time.
While this news may come as a disappointment to PS4 players, PS5 players have expressed relief. “The game would be so limited if they catered to low end hardware,” one fan wrote on X, referencing a common theory that last-gen support holds back current-gen games. “CoD should follow suit with Black Ops 7 as well,” wrote another.
Similar responses were seen on other forums.
“Companies refusing to let them [last-gen consoles] go is why this generation of consoles sucked,” a Reddit user opined. “Last gen should have been ditched four years ago,” another concurred.
Whether last gen held back the current gen or not is debatable, but the general consensus is that this generation hasn’t remotely been as exciting as the previous generations.
I’d argue that much of that is down to a lack of fresh IP and scant release schedules.
