WASHINGTON, D.C. — President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday that makes it easier for cities to remove homeless people from the streets.
“The number of individuals living on the streets in the United States on a single night during the last year of the Biden administration—274,224 —was the highest ever recorded,” according to a White House fact sheet on the executive order.
Funding from the order ensures homeless people who suffer from mental illness or addiction issues are moved into treatment facilities.
“We will use every tool, lever, and authority to get the homeless off our streets. We want to take care of them, but they have to be off our streets,” said Trump in 2023.
The order directs the Attorney General to reverse procedures that prevent local governments from taking action against the homeless.
The Trump administration will also prioritize grants for states that enforce restrictions on drug use, urban camping and loitering, urban squatting and track the location of sex offenders.
Cities have experimented with drug injection sites to mitigate substance abuse. The executive order ensures funds are not solicited for injection sites.
