“Rick and Morty” continues to expand its universe: Adult Swim has picked up a new adult animated comedy set in that universe, “President Curtis.” The news was announced Friday during the show’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, which included a surprise appearance by David.
“Rick and Morty” executive producers Dan Harmon and James Siciliano are behind the series, which sees David reprising his longtime role on the show as President Andre Curtis. Stephanie Beatriz (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) and Jim Rash (“Community”) also star. (Rash and David, of course, are both “Community” alum, keeping this all nicely in the Harmon Creative Universe.)
David (who has also leant his voice to Harmon’s Fox series “Krapopolis”) has been busy in the voice acting space: Hulu’s “King of the Hill” revival has also cast the actor in a new role. He’s also recently been heard on “Hazbin Hotel,” “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai,” “Family Guy,” “Invincible Fight Girl,” “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!,” “Hit-Monkey” and “Masters of the Universe: Revolution.” On camera, he’s recently been seen in “Duster,” “High Potential” and “Abbott Elementary.” He’ll next be on FX’s upcoming “The Lowdown.”
“President Curtis has always been a blast to play,” David said in a statement. “Getting to explore his world more deeply in this new series is a dream. I can’t wait for fans to see what kind of chaos he stirs up when Rick isn’t around to steal the spotlight.”
Per the show’s logline, “’President Curtis’ follows the Commander-in-Chief and his eccentric staff as they tackle the kind of crises that Rick Sanchez could never be bothered with – from interdimensional diplomacy to paranormal investigations and unexplained phenomena.”
Previous “Rick and Morty” TV spinoffs have included “Vindicators 2: Last Stand Between Earth and Doom” and “Rick and Morty: The Anime.” The series has also spawned multiple shorts and games.
“This is a series we would have greenlit even if it didn’t have anything at all to do with ‘Rick and Morty,’” said Adult Swim prexy Michael Ouweleen. “President Andre Curtis is just that good of a character. The rest of the world the team has fleshed out is super fun and totally stands on its own. We can’t wait for you to see it.”
Besides Harmon and Siciliano, “President Curtis” exec producers include Danielle Uhlarik, Monica Mitchell and Steve Levy.
“President Curtis has always been one of our favorite characters to write — he’s the only person in the multiverse who can go toe-to-toe with Rick and still hold office,” Harmon and Siciliano said in a joint statement. “Now we finally get to go on sci-fi missions from Curtis’ point of view. And with Keith David leading the charge, it’s going to be a wild ride.”
David is repped by Gersh Voice, Verve, DVFI Management, Meyer and Downs, and The J Squared Group.
