Donald Glover has opened up about the serious health issue that forced him to cancel last year’s Childish Gambino tour.
During his return to stage at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Knaw Carnival, the actor and musician revealed that he suffered a stroke in the middle of his New World Tour, which ended up including only 18 shows.
“I was having lots of fun, really loving seeing you guys out there, and I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana,” Glover told the Saturday night crowd at Dodgers Stadium. “I did the show anyway. I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital, and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke.'”
Glover then joked, “And the first thing I thought was like, ‘Oh, here I am still copying Jamie Foxx‘ [who suffered a stroke in 2023].” After a pause, the rapper admitted, “That’s really like the second thing. The first thing was like, ‘I’m letting everybody down.'”

The Mr. and Mrs. Smith star lamented that the guilt only persisted as he suffered more ailments and prepared to undergo surgery. “I’ve broken my foot,” he recalled to the Camp Flog Knaw Carnival audience Saturday night. “I always promise Ireland I’m gonna be there, and I still haven’t been, and they found a hole in my heart, so I had to do surgery, and then I had to have another surgery.”
However, Glover added that he has resurfaced from his medical scare more grateful for life and for his ability to perform for his fans.
“They say everybody has two lives, and the second life starts when you realize you have one,” Glover told the crowd. “You got one life, guys. And I gotta be honest, the life I’ve lived with you guys has been such a blessing. I love singing and performing for you guys.”
He concluded, “You should be living your life how you want because if we have to do this again, it can only get better.”
Representatives for Glover did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly‘s request for comment and more information.

Last October, Glover was 18 shows into the North American leg of his New World Tour — which was meant to span more than 50 performances — when he was forced to withdraw from it for health reasons.
At the time he would not disclose the issue, but when announcing the news on social media he wrote, “After my show in New Orleans, I went to the hospital in Houston to make sure of an ailment that had become apparent. It became clear I would not perform that night.”
He continued, “After more tests, I could not perform the rest of the U.S. tour in the time asked. As of now I have surgery scheduled and need time out to heal. My path to recovery is something I need to confront seriously.”

The 2024 tour was part of what Glover has called the final chapter of his Childish Gambino persona, which also includes his latest album, Bando Stone and the New World, a forthcoming film of the same name, and a re-release of his pandemic-era album, 3.15.2020, retitled Atavista.
