Highs and lows from practice No. 2

SANTA CLARA —Practice No. 2 went down Thursday at 49ers training camp with the following highlights, lowlights and other sights and sounds:

PURDY IS PURE

Brock Purdy put on a clinic to rebound from his two-interception opening practice. Only one of his 14 passes hit the ground — a wise overthrow toward Kittle in traffic over the middle.

Most impressive, Purdy beat Robert Saleh’s blitz for a completion to Demarcus Robinson, who has had a stellar start to camp.

Purdy was on with his accuracy, timing, and reads. Kittle and Robinson each had four receptions, with Kittle’s best coming on a 35-yard crossing route against Tre Brown. After finding Robinson while three defenders blitzed, Purdy finished his workload with a savvy checkdown to Patrick Taylor Jr., then a quick pass to Jordan Watkins while Mykel Williams and Bryce Huff collapsed the pocket.

OFFENSIVE STAR POWER

For a few plays, the 2023 49ers offense reappeared. Christian McCaffrey would take Purdy’s handoff and weave his way up the middle, while Trent Williams cleared the way, including once keeping Fred Warner at arm’s distance.

McCaffrey and Williams were stashed safely away from Wednesday’s opening practice after taking part in positional warmups. This time, they were in the first-string mix.

Williams’ blocking assignment on several plays was Mykel Williams, this year’s top draft pick. Trent Williams won those; they’re not related. On other plays, Trent Williams pitted himself against Nick Bosa, and a Bosa spin move to the outside was quickly countered by Purdy throwing over the top to a running back.

WILLIAMS ON D-ENDS

Trent Williams draped Mykel Williams with compliments after their first practice together, though they first got to know each other by hanging out last month in Cabo San Lucas (after the rookie daringly asked to use the All-Pro left tackle’s plane).

“Mykel is a huge dude, man. You generally don’t see guys that size on the edge,” Trent Williams said. “It sucks having to base block guys with arms as long as their legs. He has a chance to be a really good player, a chance to be dominant. He has the best coach in the league pushing him. He gets to learn from some of the best guys, like Nick.”

Williams skipped camp last season amid a contract stalemate, and he wasted no time Thursday re-igniting his friendly rivalry with Bosa.

“It’s always good to go against Nick, one of my better friends on the team but one of the best players in the league,” Williams said, “and being able to size yourself up against him, especially me going into 16 and not knowing where that cliff is, and I get to go against Nick to give me a good measuring stick.”
