The H3N2 human flu acquired new mutations over the summer, AFTER the vaccine strains had been chosen. The new subclade K is causing major outbreaks in Japan, Canada, and the UK. The US CDC is, of course, absent due to being gutted and then shut down for six weeks. The H3N2 strain is dominating in UK samples, making up as much as 90% of cases. Last year’s season was almost equally split between H1N1 and H3N2. H3 is generally harder on the elderly, more likely to cause hospitalization. But even a mismatched vaccine does some good, so get it if you haven’t, and MASK!
