Sophie Winkleman has spoken about what life is like inside the Royal Family, expressing her sympathy towards people who spend their entire lives inside it
An actress has shared the “brutal” realisation she made after marrying into the Royal Family. Sophie Winkleman, half-sister of The Traitors host Claudia and best known for playing Big Suze in Peep Show, has been married to Lord Frederick Windsor since 2009.
Lord Frederick Windsor is the son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, second cousin to King Charles and officially 54th in line to the throne.
Sophie, also known as Lady Frederick Windsor, has spoken of her sympathy for members of the Royal Family because of how they have to live in the spotlight for their entire lives.
She told The Times: “The more I get to know the Royal Family, the more I get that their lives are total hell and that level of unasked-for fame is a form of torture. None of them went on Pop Idol or something to be famous.
“To have that sort of blinding spotlight in your face from when you’re born, not knowing quite whom you can trust, not knowing if someone’s going to betray you, people writing lies about you the whole time, is just brutal.
“I feel for them all. I don’t think a life with that much scrutiny and pressure is remotely healthy, but they have no choice.”
Outside of her acting work, Sophie has used her public profile to be an advocate for children’s welfare, including the role of technology in schools.
Earlier this year she suggested that schools could bring back blackboards and chalk instead of relying on smartboards to teach children and warned about the impact of AI.
Speaking at the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) conference she said there was talks of “AI being pumped into our classrooms with children’s data being harvested to better improve the AI”.
She added: “The fact that AI will soon outperform humans in many areas means schools should be backing away from the neurological junk food of digital learning, alert to the fact that it’s counterproductive to learn anyway from an instantly ageing system, and teaching their pupils the deeply human skills, which AI will have a harder time replacing.”
Meanwhile, Sophie isn’t the only non-royal individual to speak about what life is like inside the Royal Family with Mike Tindall, married to Princess Anne’s daughter Zara Tindall, also addressing his own role.
Mike has been married to Zara since 2011, he has addressed such issues as to whether he would accept a royal title. In response to the question asked by Closer magazine, he said: “I would definitely turn that down.”
Mike has also addressed his and Zara’s ability to generate an income whilst inside the Royal Family. Speaking about the matter in 2023, he said: “Everyone thinks that just by marrying Zara that means it’s all fine and dandy. But that doesn’t stop the fact that you need a job.
“And it’s not that easy. You get quite institutionalised into rugby, it’s a way of life and you leave the game and that’s not there.”
