What Mavs Fan Was Told By Patrick Dumont About Luka Trade After Viral Courtside Video

Dallas Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont expressed a level of regret about the Luka Dončić when chatting with a frustrated Mavs fan, according to The Athletic’s Christian Clark.

Clark reported the fan, Nicholas Dickason, approached Dumont courtside during Monday’s 116-114 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks to apologize for earlier remarks he made.

During their chat, Dumont showed his own level of contrition.

“Basically Patrick was like, he feels horrible for the trade. And wants to make it up to us,” Dickason said to Clark. “That’s basically what he said. He accepted my apology for it as well.”

Dickason also recounted the convo with the Dallas Morning NewsMike Curtis.

“[Dumont] said he was trying to do what’s best for the organization and ‘Sometimes you have good intentions and you make mistakes.’ We all do it,” he said.

Dickason also clarified he remains a Mavericks fan despite wearing Luka’s Los Angeles Lakers jersey.

Look no further than recent events to see Dumont’s regret is very real. ESPN’s Shams Charania and Tim MacMahon reported the Mavs are set to fire general manager Nico Harrison and make the pair of Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi their interim leads on basketball-related business.

This is coming less than a full year after Dončić’s shocking trade to the Lakers, one that dramatically altered Dallas’ trajectory. There’s no clearer sign that Dumont considers the move to be a huge mistake.

Unfortunately for him, he can’t unring the bell.

Dumont can’t undo the Luka trade, and he can’t make people forget his role in approving a transaction almost everybody could see would end badly.

Assuming Harrison’s ouster signals an eventual rebuild, the Mavericks at least have a long-term cornerstone in Cooper Flagg. The No. 1 overall pick is averaging 15 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists through his first 11 games.

Still, turning Dallas into a serious contender again will take years, and the process of Dumont building a level of goodwill with the fanbase could be even longer.
