CHICAGO (WLS) — Drivers could see dangerous conditions on the roads as overnight snowfall blanketed the Chicago area.

Some schools in the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana announced school closures and delayed starts because of the weather.
Much of the Chicago area was under a Winter Storm Warning Monday morning.
ABC7 meteorologists issued an AccuWeather Alert for Monday, for the possibly dangerous travel conditions for the morning commute.
ABC7’s Tracy Butler said Chicago likely already experienced the worst part of the snow fall by 5:30 a.m. Some snow is likely to fall through the morning, however the bulk is already on the ground.
At about 6:30 a.m. northbound DuSable Lake Shore Dr. was shut down after a five cars crashed near Oakwood Boulevard. Police said there were no major injuries.
By 7 a.m. crews cleared the crash and all lanes reopened.
Areas that experienced intense lake-effect snow saw 1 to 2 inches per hour with some areas already seeing more than 3 inches of snow accumulation.
In Indiana, Crown Point already saw 10 inches, Momence had 12 inches and Hobart accumulated 6.5 inches overnight.
Southern suburbs and Northwest Indiana will continue to be more of the focus for heavy accumulating snow.
Over at Waukegan airport, a viewer sent a photo measuring up to 8 inches of snow by 7 a.m.
Temperatures are in the 20s with wind chills in the teens.
Light, on-and-off snow showers could linger through Monday’s afternoon hours.

Areas under a Winter Storm Warning (listed below) could see between 3 and 6 inches of snow.
The CTA said Route #147 north and southbound routes have been rerouted due to “severe weather conditions near Lake Shore Drive.”
Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield warned of dangerous roads amid the snowfall. He told ABC7 they have alredy responded to about 50 calls of services.

The incoming storm, combined with the FAA reduction in operations this week, has also made air travel quite frustrating coming in and out of Chicago. More than 400 flights have been canceled at Chicago airports on Sunday, with extensive delays impacting travelers.
As of 4 a.m. Monday, O’Hare had 231 cancellations with delays averaging 24 minutes. At Midway, there were 130 cancellations with an average delay of 15 minutes.
The City of Chicago’s Department of Streets and Sanitation announced it is deploying salt-spreader trucks to respond to the potential severe winter weather road conditions, and the city is encouraging residents to take precautions while driving.
