After wrapping Season 13 of the Canadian mockumentary in August, Mike Smith is stepping back from Trailer Park Boys amid a sexual assault lawsuit against him.
The group behind the Netflix comedy noted that they take “such matters seriously” and that Smith has “stepped away” from his role as Trailer Park Boys Inc.’s managing director after he was charged early last month over an alleged incident that happened in 2017.
“We are aware of the allegation concerning Mike Smith dating back to 2017 and take such matters seriously,” said Trailer Park Boys Inc. in a statement to multiple outlets. “We recognize how difficult an allegation of this nature is for all involved.”
They added, “Out of respect for the legal process, we will not comment further on the case. At this time, Mike has stepped away from his role at Trailer Park Boys Incorporated and Gary Howsam has assumed managing director responsibilities.”
Filed in Nova Scotia provincial court, Smith was charged on Oct. 2 for an alleged assault that took place on Dec. 30, 2017 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, according to CBC News.
Created by Mike Clattenburg, Smith has starred on Trailer Park Boys as Bubbles since the show premiered in 2001, alongside Rob Wells’ Ricky and John Paul Tremblay as Julian. After initially ending a seven-season run in 2007, Netflix revived the show in 2014.
In August, Deadline exclusively reported that Season 13 had wrapped in Nova Scotia, following a nearly eight-year gap since Season 12 premiered.
