Indianapolis Colts owner and CEO Carlie Irsay-Gordon bought a round of drinks for fans on Saturday in Berlin, where her team and the Atlanta Falcons are set to face off on Sunday.
The Colts have gotten off to a 7-2 start, already matching their win total from last year with eight games still remaining.
A win on Sunday would put the Colts atop the AFC in a first-place tie to close Week 10 with the 8-2 Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots should the latter team beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Indianapolis is clearly going for it this year, with the team trading a pair of first-round draft picks to the New York Jets for two-time All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner before the trade deadline.
Before the Colts made the move, per Per Sports Illustrated‘s Albert Breer, Irsay-Gordon reportedly posted this question to Colts general manager Chris Ballard about the team’s secondary concerns: “Do you want to Band-Aid it or fix it for the long term?”
The Colts and Jets had already discussed a potential Gardner move beforehand. The move became official on Tuesday.
Irsay-Gordon took over ownership of the team after the passing of her father, ex-Colts owner Jim Irsay, last May. She’s notably taken a hands-on approach with the team, including being present on the sidelines and wearing a headset.
Whatever Irsay-Gordon is doing is clearly working. She’s received much deserved praise for that hands-on approach and tremendous work ethic, including from Colts quarterback Daniel Jones.
Indianapolis is clearly in position now to truly make a run at the Super Bowl. The schedule isn’t easy down the stretch, with a home game against the three-time defending AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs and a road matchup with the 6-2 Seattle Seahawks among the tough contests. However, the Colts have impressed so far and have the personnel and leadership in place to keep this positive momentum going.
For now, their next matchup is with Atlanta. Kickoff is set for 9:30 a.m. on Sunday at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.
