After being a part of NHL history, Jordan Binnington was not in a sharing mood.
The St. Louis Blues goaltender surrendered Alex Ovechkin’s 900th career goal, and then tried to keep the milestone goal puck for himself.
As Ovechkin celebrated with his teammates along the boards, Binnington fished the puck out of the net with his stick and then put the goal puck down his pants, near his right buttocks.
NHL linesman Michel Cormier, however, was wise to Binnington’s attempted heist and asked him for the keepsake back. Binnington acquiesced and reached back into his pants, retrieving the puck.
Ovechkin laughed when asked about Jordan Binnington’s attempted theft, saying he learned about the moment postgame.
“I’m not going to comment on that,” he replied smiling — moments after posing with the milestone puck along with Jakob Chychrun, the assist man on the play.
Ovechkin has been keeping all his milestone gear, including the goal pucks, after every goal he scores. He was seen giving the stick he scored 900 with to Capitals equipment manager Brock Myles when he went back to the bench.
The Capitals captain has plans to open up a museum in his native Moscow with all the memorabilia he’s kept when his career is over. And thanks to Cormier, he’ll be able to show off no. 900, too.
