Notre Dame and Auburn are reportedly set to face off on the football field for the first time in the history of the two schools.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Notre Dame and Auburn agreed to a home-and-home for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. The first matchup will take place at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, while the second will occur at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn.
Talks between the two schools surrounding the upcoming pair of games factored into the Tigers’ decision to move their 2026 clash with Baylor to a neutral site, per Thamel.
On Oct. 6, Auburn announced that its home game against Baylor next season would be moved to Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta so that players could engage in name, image and likeness (NIL) activations tied directly to ticket sales and surrounding events.
For the Fighting Irish, the addition of Auburn on their 2026 slate gives them another SEC opponent after “record strength” was an added metric to the 2025 College Football Playoff selection process.
Notre Dame is searching for a second consecutive CFP appearance under head coach Marcus Freeman, currently sitting at 6-2. The Fighting Irish are riding a six-game win streak after dropping their first two contests, owning the No. 10 spot in the first CFP rankings.
Auburn will be looking to get off to a stronger start in 2026 after firing head coach Hugh Freeze on Sunday after the team fell to 4-5. This included a 1-5 record against conference foes.
