—Break down myths about menopause, and replace fear with facts and confidence.

—Find community and support where women can learn and grow together.

Cooper explained for WJLE how she fostered this desire to better educate women about these health issues.

“When my children were young I had so much focus on nurturing them that I  entered a time of dormancy about myself. Once they left home I started becoming curious because I was perimenopausal. I was 46 years old and started discovering things that were shocking to me. I kept thinking do women know this? We don’t know all the things about what happens to us with mid life hormonal changes. I said to myself someone really needs to do a class and I finally realized that someone is me,” said Cooper.

“In these classes, everything I will be sharing is not my opinion. Its going to be from MD’s or PhDs in books I have read, podcasts I have listened to and we will also have two other professionals. I am a physical therapist. That is what I went to school for. My husband, Dr. Steve Cooper will be doing one of the classes and a friend of mine Karin Waddell who is a physical therapist assistant and a certified health and nutrition coach will also have lots of information to share about optimizing lifestyles, fitness, nutrition for mid life and beyond. We will be talking about a whole host of things about the health consequences we face when we enter into this season in life that stay with us for the rest of our lives. We will spend one third to one half of our lives in this state of deprived hormones” Cooper explained.

“During this class, about 40% of the material is going to be more specific to perimenopause, menopause, and the season after that. But about 60% of the information is actually applicable to a woman of any age. Some of the health risks include osteoporosis, coronary artery disease, neuroinflammation which is like brain fog, insulin resistance. We begin to take on more visceral fat which is the fat around our internal organs that is more of the harmful fat. The subcutaneous fat is on the outer layer or the fat we can pinch but we take on more visceral fat when our hormones decrease. We have something called musculoskeletal syndrome with menopause, which is like arthritis type symptoms, joint pain, inflammation, bone weakness, and then we have another syndrome called genitourinary syndrome of menopause which involves changes in the genital and urinary tract when we are deprived of hormones especially in our pelvis”, said Cooper

“Its really about educating women. We’re smart. We can make good choices. We just need to be provided accurate, up to date information. We need to be empowered. Its about shared decision making with your health care provider. Its about us being able to ask questions and become educated so we can be partners in our decision-making process,” added Cooper
