Less than one week after Justin Trudeau and Katy Perry made their public debut as a couple, the former Canadian Prime Minister seems to have used his Halloween costume as a subtle way to break his silence about their budding romance.
When Perry performed at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2015, she did so with dancers in shark costumes on stage behind her—and this went viral thanks to dancing from the “Left Shark,” also known in real life as Bryan Gaw. Interestingly, Trudeau chose to dress up as a shark that looked nearly identical to the sharks from Perry’s big performance a decade ago.
Posing with his son Hadrien—who was a surfer for Halloween—Trudeau wrote, cheekily, “I’m the shark (to his left).”
“We built the costume together—a little father-son Halloween teamwork,” he added on Instagram.

Trudeau and Perry’s first public appearance together as a couple took place on October 25 in Paris, when the duo took in a cabaret show at the Crazy Horse to mark Perry’s 41st birthday. This outing came three months after their first public date at Le Violon in Montreal, Canada this past July.
“They both have busy schedules but make time for each other and have a really strong connection,” a source told People. “Katy didn’t expect to fall for somebody so soon, but Justin checks all the boxes. He has a great sense of humor, he’s charming, and he treats her with respect.”

Trudeau separated from his wife Sophie Grégoire—with whom he shares three children—in 2023; Perry and Orlando Bloom, who are parents of 5-year-old Daisy Dove, split over the summer. Trudeau “has had a lot of upheavals in the past couple of years, both in his professional-political status and at home with the split from Sophie,” an insider shared.
“He is a much happier person now,” the source continued about life with Perry. “Stresses are greatly diminished. And he is intrigued with Katy. They have fun together, laugh a lot, talk about everything.”
The insider added, “His life is much improved, and his relationship with Katy has had a lot to do with it.”

As Perry continues her Lifetimes tour, the two “have been seeing each other as often as possible,” the source said. “Obviously, she’s busy, but so is he. Yet he goes the extra mile to be with her when possible. Especially when it’s important.”
Trudeau is “in awe of her talent, but also impressed with her intelligence and grasp of issues affecting everyone,” they added. “He likes her outspokenness and that she isn’t afraid to voice her opinion.”

For her part, “Dating Justin is something she never saw coming, but she’s really enjoying this surprising life twist,” a different source told People.
Perry remains “focused on her tour, and Justin has made a real effort to meet her where she is—literally,” a separate insider shared. “She’s flattered. He’s shown that he’s committed and really cares about spending time with her. It’s clear that he values the connection, and so does Katy. She’s in a great place.”
