Kate Hudson is entering a new era of her acting career, and she’s doing so in a seriously show-stopping gown that basically looks like liquid glitter. The Running Point actress graced the cover of Variety’s Power of Women issue in a spaghetti strap dress covered in sequins from top to toe. As for glam? Hudson went for a dialed down version of Old Hollywood hair and makeup, with soft curls styled in a side part and a mauve lip.

Hudson is approaching the end of a long promotional tour for her new film Song Sung Blue, in which she stars opposite Hugh Jackman. The veteran duo play Claire and Mike Sardina, a real-life couple who formed a wildly successful Neil Diamond tribute band in the late 1980s. The film is based on a 2008 documentary of the same name.

“There’s no frills in this movie,” Hudson told Variety. “It’s not glamorous. And there are some shots where my mom saw me as a middle-aged woman. That made us all think about what it is to get older and to come into yourself.”

Elsewhere in the interview, writer-director Craig Brewer revealed that Hudson actually landed the role because of the actress’s own real-life singing career, which began in earnest with the release of her 2024 debut album Glorious. Brewer saw Hudson cry during an interview with CBS Sunday Morning and thought, “There’s that woman all of us fell in love with in Almost Famous.”

“I felt lucky that I knew the peaks and valleys of this roller-coaster ride,” Hudson said. “One minute you’re the hot ingenue and you’re up here, and then the next minute you’re wondering why you’re not in the conversation for certain things that you know you can do. It’s never been something that has defined my value.”
