T-Mobile Breaks Industry Standards, Becomes First In U.S. To Launch L4S On 5G For Smoother Video Calls, Lag-Free Gaming, And Ultra-Responsive Real-Time Experiences

The big telecommunications service providers in the U.S. are working hard to sustain their position and become the leading carriers. T-Mobile, especially, has been ardently working on improving its services and pushing its limits by announcing initiatives ahead of its rivals’ offerings. The company has undergone major changes, including transitioning to a more self-service model to reduce dependence on the physical stores.

Similarly, its ambitious approach to bringing emergency texting for users and extending communication to far-flung areas via satellite has received much attention. Now, the company is taking another leap by bringing low-latency technology to 5G and will make history by being the first wireless provider to bring this support to the U.S.

Online gaming and video calls just got better as T-Mobile rolls out L4S for smoother and lower-latency performance

Mobile carriers increasingly invest in adopting the latest networking technologies to improve user experience and avoid issues such as stuttering during online games and laggy video calls. As part of these ongoing improvements and upgrades, T-Mobile has now made a major announcement and is determined to improve its 5G network experience by bringing seamless online gaming sessions and video chats.

What makes this initiative more interesting is that T-Mobile would be the first to introduce the L4S standard, which is the Low Latency, Low Loss, Scalable Throughput technology meant to reduce transmission delays. The capability works by reducing network congestion, which helps real-time applications send data more promptly and smooths the process. It differs from the existing systems due to the ability to ensure the flow is efficient from the beginning, and not waiting for the pile-ups in the end.

It is important to highlight that the L4S is not meant to increase 5G download speeds but instead ensure lower latency across the network by making faster decisions and reducing the congestion experienced. T-Mobile clarifies that since the upgrade is made on their end, a new device or updated plan is not needed to benefit from the advancement. The standard is already being used in Wi-Fi and wired internet, and T-Mobile is now bringing it to 5G networks.

T-Mobile is making this improvement to prepare for the next phase of 5G technology it has in store, which is 5.5G, or what can also be referred to as 5G-advanced, which brings more reliable and smarter networks. While the biggest improvement the L4S standard would bring about is smoother video calls, it would also significantly enhance the visual experience in AR glasses with steadier frame rates. T-Mobile emphasizes that it is striving for other real-time technologies by taking this step, such as remote driving, and is interested in playing a salient role in enterprise use.
