Hot off her Emmy nomination for her work in HBO’s The Penguin, Cristin Milioti is jumping into her next screen project, an independent horror thriller titled Buddy.
Casper Kelly, who co-created Adult Swim shows such as Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell and the horror comedy viral sensation Too Many Cooks, is directing the feature, which began production this week in Ohio.
J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules are producing via their BoulderLight Pictures, the banner that is having a, um, banner year with Companion, Friendship, and the upcoming horror movie Weapons, on their slate.
Tyler Davidson and Drew Sykes are producing for Low Spark Films, the Cleveland, Ohio based production company that counts Emily The Criminal and Take Shelter amongst their credits. The company is co-financing the project.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the project is being described as a “new experience in horror.” Kelly co-wrote the script with Jamie King, who previously worked on the Disney+ family movie World’s Best.
BoulderLight vp of development & production Tracy Rosenblum is executive producing. Range Select and UTA are co-repping the project’s distribution rights.
The feature is being produced in association with Sipur Studios (Bad Boy) & Substance. This marks Sipur’s first investment in the horror space.
Coming from Kelly, the movie is likely to be a genre-defying piece of work. Too Many Cooks, made for Adult Swim, was a short that began as a parody riff on the opening credits of 1980s and 1990s sitcoms and other shows before slowly turning into a slasher story that interacted with the text of the credits. He also contributed a fake commercial titled “Goblin Chedder” to cult horror movie Mandy.
Milioti played Sofia Falcone, the daughter of a deceased gangster, in Penguin in which she stars opposite Colin Farrell. On top of last week’s Emmy nomination, the role has earned her nomination for a Golden Globe and SAG Award, and a win Critics Choice Award win for best actress in a limited series.
Amongst her other credits is the acclaimed 2020 time loop dark comedy Palm Springs and highly-regarded episodes of Black Mirror.
