After two years away from the football field, former Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills running back Nyheim Hines has achieved his goal of returning to the NFL.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Hines reached an agreement with the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday.
The addition of Hines comes after Chargers running back Najee Harris was placed on the NFI list due to an eye injury suffered on July 4 in a fireworks mishap. Harris’ agent told ESPN’s Kris Rhim that the injury is “superficial” and his client is expected to be ready for the 2025 season.
Hines suffered a torn ACL in a 2023 jet ski accident and hasn’t played in the NFL since then. After being released by the Bills, he signed with the Cleveland Browns for the 2024 season but didn’t appear in a game for them before being released in February.
After entering the NFL as a fourth-round pick in the 2018 draft, Hines has produced career numbers of 1,202 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns along with 1,778 receiving yards and eight receiving scores. He’s also accumulated 1,832 career return yards and four return touchdowns.
The Chargers also added some depth to their backfield earlier this offseason by selecting Ohio State running back Omari Hampton with the No. 22 pick in this year’s draft. Bringing in Hines ahead of the start of training camp this week gives Los Angeles a veteran who is motivated to prove that he belongs in the NFL.
