The Pittsburgh Steelers unveiled Monday the throwback uniforms they’ll wear for a Week 8 matchup with the Green Bay Packers this season.
The old school threads are a nod to the Steelers’ inaugural 1933 team:
“We’re excited to unveil our new throwback uniforms which not only pay tribute to the origins of the Steelers franchise but also to the deep connection we have to our hometown of Pittsburgh,” president Art Rooney II said. “It’s especially fitting that we’ll debut these uniforms on Sunday night, Oct. 26, when we play the Green Bay Packers — another franchise in the league with a long and rich history.”
The Steelers have maintained the same general design for their home and road uniforms for multiple decades now. Their branding is among the NFL’s most iconic.
That makes it all the more jarring when Pittsburgh reaches into its history and brings back a look from generations ago. The old “bumblebee” jerseys have been seared into the memories of fans.
The Steelers have turned the clock back to 1933 before. The last iteration, which coincided with the NFL’s 25th anniversary in 1994, was more faithful to the original and featured the City of Pittsburgh crest front and center:
The Pittsburgh crest is still integrated into the Steelers’ new throwback, albeit much less prominently on the left shoulder.
The team’s October date with the Packers already figured to be a highly anticipated occasion. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers is going up against the franchise for whom he spent 18 years. He has yet to line up on the opposite sideline from Green Bay.
The Steelers’ retro-inspired jerseys are another reason this game will feel a little more special.
