We knew something was up with Oblivion Remastered’s anticipated physical release, because Bethesda has simply refused to provide a straight answer in any of its marketing materials.

As it turns out, you will need an “additional download” to actually play the game, despite the disc containing the base adventure and its two expansions right out of the box.

The publisher confirms this in a newly published FAQ article, which reads:

“The Physical Deluxe Edition comes in an amary case with a disc for Xbox or PlayStation and includes the following:
– Base game plus the Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine story expansions, as well as the additional downloadable content: Fighter’s Stronghold, Spell Tomes, Vile Lair, Mehrune’s Razor, The Thieves Den, Wizard’s Tower, The Orrery, and Horse Pack Armor.
Additional download required to play the game.
– A code that grants access to Unique digital Akatosh and Mehrunes Dagon Armors, Weapons and Horse Armor Sets, as well as Digital Artbook and Soundtrack App”

And if there are still any doubts about what this means, the article continues:

Internet will be required to download full game files and extras, but can be played offline after the initial download.”

This explains why the box art for Remastered features an ‘Internet Required’ disclaimer.

Many assumed that this could just be for the sake of DLC extras, like the aforementioned armour sets — but no, you really do need to pull some kind of update before you can dive in.
