Final Fantasy’s beloved fighting spin-off is soon set to make a return

Final Fantasy fighting spin-off Dissidia is soon set to make a return after its PSP heyday, but so far it’s only coming to mobile devices.

Square Enix has teased an announcement stream (below) tomorrow, 14th October, with the game heading to both iOS and Android as Team Boss Battle.

A website for the game has been launched, with some lovely views of Tokyo and, separately, some silhouettes of Final Fantasy characters including Lightning, Rinoa, Cloud, and Zidane.

Little else is known about the game so far, but its mobile exclusivity will be disappointing for fans.

Dissidia Final Fantasy first released on Sony’s PSP handheld in 2008 for the 20th anniversary of the series. It pits characters from across the franchise against each other in elaborate 3D battles, and received a follow-up in 2011.

Later, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT was released for arcades in Japan, followed by a release on PS4 and PC. Then in 2017, Square Enix released the mobile game Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia.

However, that game shut down in February last year. Indeed, Square Enix has shut down a number of mobile games in the last couple of years, including Final Fantasy 7 The First Soldier and Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius.

There’s already concern, then, that this new Dissidia game will be another gacha-focused game with an ill-fated lifespan.

Yet the company seems intent on releasing new mobile games. Last month it announced Dragon Quest Smash/Grow for mobile devices, capitalising on renewed series success.
