There was some thought that the Browns would actually elevate QB Bailey Zappe and make him the backup this week. A practice squad elevated player is not eligible to be the emergency quarterback, so Zappe would have had to be the backup or signed to the active roster to play.
Instead, Zappe won’t even be elevated this week as Cleveland has only brought up CB Tre Avery for Week 6. This is the third week in a row for Avery to be elevated. The fourth-year cornerback has played 28 snaps in his first two weeks, all on special teams.
The Browns will only have two quarterbacks available for Week 6: Gabriel and Sanders. Injuries to both would lead to a difficult decision for the team.
