Apple was reportedly planning to release new M5-powered MacBook Pro models later this year, but it appears that the company has reshifted its approach. A new report claims that the Cupertino giant will launch the MacBook Pro with M5 refresh early next year, alongside a handful of additional devices, including the iPhone 17e. With the M5 version delayed, we can safely presume that the OLED MacBook Pro with M6 chip would see a further delay as well.
Appleās OLED MacBook Pro with M6 chip could arrive later as M5 faces delay
In his latest report on Bloomberg, industry analyst Mark Gurman claims that Apple has no plans to refresh any Macs with its updated M5 chip this year. He claims that the updated M5 MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models will launch together in the Spring of next year. Gurman is contradicting his own previous speculations that pointed to an end-of-year launch for the M5 MacBook Pro. The company launched the M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max MacBook Pro last year in October, and delaying the launch would mean that the company is moving away from its annual upgrade cycle.
Alongside the M5 MacBook Pro, the company was also expected to unveil the M5 iPad Pro models that have already derailed from their annual Spring launch time frame. It remains to be seen if the company is still planning to announce the M5 iPad Pro, but based on past trends, it seems highly likely. This is due to the fact that Apple announced its latest chips on the iPad Pro first, before trickling them down to the rest of the products. For instance, the M4 chip was announced with the OLED iPad Pro models last year in May, and the M4 MacBook Pro models were announced later that year in October. If the company follows the same trend, we might see the M5 iPad Pro announcement in October.
Altogether, there are a range of devices that will be launched early next year. You can check out the list below for more details on what you should be looking forward to.
- M5 MacBook Pro models
- M4 iPad Air
- New entry-level iPad with a faster chip
- M5 MacBook Air
- iPhone 17e
- New Mac external monitor
While the next MacBook Pro upgrade was only incremental, boiling down to just under-the-hood improvements, the M6 MacBook Pro upgrade would be substantially larger than anticipated. We are expecting the M6 version of the MacBook Pro to feature an OLED display instead of miniLED, with thinner bezels and possibly an overall thinner and lighter profile. It was recently pointed out by different analysts and publications that the first OLED MacBook Pro would also see daylight in 2026. Well, if Apple has plans to delay the M5 MacBook Pro until 2026, the OLED variant with an M6 chip will not debut in the same year. The company would wait another year to keep a safe distance between the two models, disrupting the company’s launch time frames. However, there are no concrete details available in this regard as the supply chain has been quiet for now.
Do take the news with a grain of salt as it is still young and supply chain sources could point to a different story. We will update you as soon as the story develops.
