Most readers want Yankees manager Aaron Boone, left, and general manager Brian Cashman gone after New York’s season ended in the American League Division Series. Vincent Carchietta / USA Today
The New York Yankees’ season came to an end Wednesday night, falling 5-2 to the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 4 of the American League Division Series. After another Yankees postseason run came up short, the job security of general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone is again being called into question.
While the campaign’s outcome is a disappointment, it seems likely that Boone and Cashman are safe. After all, the Blue Jays might just have been the better team in the best-of-five series, and there wasn’t much that management could have done to overcome it.
The Athletic’s readers were asked to share their thoughts on the matter with a poll asking fans to select from four options: fire both, keep both, fire Boone and keep Cashman, or fire Cashman and keep Boone. It turns out that the fans have mixed thoughts.
Here’s how the voting broke down:
- Fire both Boone and Cashman: 41%
- Keep both Boone and Cashman: 26%
- Fire Boone and keep Cashman: 21%
- Fire Cashman and keep Boone: 12%
The most popular answer was to fire both, but the second-most popular was to keep both. So a vast majority of voters prefer to either keep the status quo or clean house, consisting of 67% of those polled.
For those who were split, it is clear that Boone shouldered more of the blame from fans, as has been the case in the past. Firing Boone and keeping Cashman was responsible for 21% of responses, while firing Cashman and keeping Boone got just 12%.
Yankees fans are certainly far from a consensus on this issue. It’s only a matter of time before all of them know whether Cashman will survive for his 29th season as GM and whether Boone will be at the helm for his ninth season as manager.
All Yankees fans know is that it’s been 16 years since New York won a World Series — and one year since it appeared in one.
