Justin Tafa is no longer a member of the UFC roster and now he’s stepping away from the sport.
A person with knowledge of the promotion’s plans confirmed to MMA Fighting that Tafa was released after he was scratched from UFC Perth following an illness during the event’s official weigh-ins. While his opponent Louie Sutherland made weight for the heavyweight main card matchup, Tafa never got to the scale.
Following the news, Tafa announced on his social media he’ll be taking a break from MMA, and hopes he’ll be able to return at full health.
“The body and mind needs time to recover, six major surgeries in the last three years does that to you,” Tafa wrote on Instagram. “Time to enjoy the other fruits of life for now and enjoy watching my kids grow. Thank you UFC, had some good times in there.
“God willing If I return to fight again I will be a lot healthier and able to show you my true potential. If not then God has something else planned in store for me. I appreciate all the support and love, you guys pushed me on when I thought I couldn’t. What a ride.“
Tafa went 4-5 with one no contest during his UFC tenure, and became the first fighter in UFC history to miss weight for a heavyweight bout in 2021. All of Tafa’s UFC victories ended by knockout, which includes wins over Parker Porter, Austen Lane, and Juan Adams.
