Bradley Cooper is in talks to star in the “Ocean’s Eleven” prequel with Margot Robbie.
This project is expected to take place before Steven Soderbergh’s 2001 heist comedy “Ocean’s Eleven,” starring George Clooney, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts. That film, about con artists who rob hundreds of millions from a Las Vegas casino, became a critical and commercial smash and spawned two sequels. Of course, those movies were based on 1960’s “Ocean’s 11,” featuring five members of Frank Sinatra’s Rat Pack.
“Twisters” filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung is directing the prequel, taking over duties from Jay Roach, who was originally on board to helm the prequel. Carrie Solomon is working on the screenplay, which — based on earlier reports — is expected to take in 1960s Europe. The title has yet to be confirmed, but a few numbers are likely unavailable: 2004’s “Ocean’s Twelve” and 2007’s “Ocean’s Thirteen” are the sequels to “Ocean’s Eleven,” and 2018’s “Ocean’s Eight” starred Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway and Rihanna. And Clooney recently said that he expects to shoot “Ocean’s Fourteen” with Damon, Pitt and Roberts next year. So, it’s anyone’s guess what Roman numeral will distinguish Robbie and Cooper’s mission.
Cooper’s next theatrical effort is the dramatic comedy “Is This Thing On?,” which will host its world premiere on Friday at the New York Film Festival. The movie, inspired by the life of British comedian John Bishop and starring Will Arnett and Laura Dern, marks Cooper’s third directorial effort following “A Star Is Born” and “Maestro.” In front of the camera, he’s best known for “The Hangover,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” “American Hustle” and “American Sniper.”
