While it does seem like every day from May through October should be National Ice Cream Day, that isn’t actually the case.
No, that day this year is Sunday, July 20.
So, how can you celebrate? Simple: Eat some ice cream. Any ice cream will do. Tillamook from the freezer section at Safeway works. A Drumstick from an ice cream truck. Whatever you can find!
But if you want to have something extra special to commemorate the day, here are five ideas.
Peanut-something, or maybe chocolate, at Cornet Custard

Cornet Custard is the place to go if you want a creamy, over-the-top scoop of custard chock-full of mix-ins. Try everything before you make your choice but we recommend pretty much anything here with peanuts, peanut butter or chocolate. And don’t skip the imported cone.
Details: Cornet Custard, 4529 S.E. Division St., open noon to 9:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, noon to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, cornetpdx.com.
Kulfi at Kulfi

Technically, the kulfi at Kulfi isn’t a scoop but a bar, a delicious ice bar with rich flavors that will likely become your favorite ice cream-adjacent treat. Try the mango lassi, which uses just three ingredients: yogurt, mango and sugar. It’s close enough to health food that you might as well get two or 10.
Details: Kulfi, 3540 N. Williams St., open 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily, kulfipdx.com.
Marionberry vodka at Tipsy Scoop
If you’re asking yourself if we, as in humanity, all of us, need boozy ice cream, well, it turns out the answer is yes. At least, it’s yes at Tipsy Scoop, where the ice cream has an ABV of 5%, which gives it a lovely texture but won’t get you drunk (you still need to be 21 to have the spiked flavors, though). Try the surprisingly pillowy, almost like marshmallow cream, Portland exclusive flavor, which uses Wild Roots vodka for a dairy-free Marionberry vodka ice cream.
Details: Tipsy Scoop, 3987 N. Mississippi Ave., open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, tipsyscoop.com.
A sundae at Sugarpine

The truth is, you can’t go wrong at Sugarpine Drive-In in Troutdale. Get whatever special is on the menu and spend the rest of the afternoon basking in the sun on the shores of the Sandy River, feeling grateful that you get to live near a place that features both soft-serve and a beach.
Details: Sugarpine Drive-In, 1208 E. Historic Columbia River Hwy, Troutdale, open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m Thursday-Monday, sugarpinedrivein.com.
The special at Pinolo Gelato
Another place where you can’t go wrong? Pinolo Gelato. Try everything and then pick a couple of the flavors that speak to you. Cioccolato and Hazelnut are always good but the special, whether it’s Foresta, which tastes like a forest, or a pistachio chocolate with a pistachio ganache or something you’ve never even dreamed of, is usually something you will think about for days to come.
Pinolo Gelato, 3707 S.E. Division St., open 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily, pinologelato.com.
