Ryan Day now has a higher career winning percentage than college football’s all-time leader in head coach winning percentage.
With 75 wins in 85 games, Ryan Day’s winning percentage of 88.2% has surpassed that of Notre Dame legend Knute Rockne, college football’s all-time leader in career winning percentage with a mark of 88.1%.
When asked about the achievement after the game, Day had jokes.
“Well, I’m glad you brought that up because this is the last game I’ll ever be coaching at Ohio State,” Day said with a laugh. “I’m gonna hang it up, and that’s it. I’m gonna do a walk off right now — I’ve appreciated being the coach here.”
Day continued: “No, a long way to go. It has everything to do with the players, the coaches and this place… Some of these seasons are like dog years at Ohio State, but I’m fortunate to be here, and I know what the obligation is, I know what the expectation is, and so do these players and coaches, so we’ll just keep swinging away.”
Day isn’t yet the NCAA’s official leader in all-time winning percentage, as the NCAA requires a minimum of 10 years to earn a spot in its record book for all-time winning percentage. Nevertheless, his winning percentage speaks to just how consistently great the Buckeyes have been since Day became their head coach in 2019.
Day has never lost more than two games in a season, winning at least 11 games every year except 2020, when the Buckeyes played just eight games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He’s now won nine straight games dating back to last season, when the Buckeyes won four straight College Football Playoff games on their way to a national championship.
