BOONE, N.C. — Here is what Oregon State coach Trent Bray had to say to the media following the Beavers’ 27-23 loss to Appalachian State on Saturday:
What happened on the goal line stand?
Bray: I mean it was downhill, vertical play. We remove one of their guys from the box. We should have numbers. When they stop us three times, fun for them.
Down 17-0, then turn things around. Some tremendous performances, but you come up short. That’s got to be hard.
Bray: Yeah, it is extremely hard.
What is missing right now? Is it mental?
Bray: There are moments, we’re right there. We’ve got opportunities to make plays, and we’re not making them. We’re down in the red zone twice at the end of the game, inside the 10-yard line (then) on the 1. We get them in third and extra long, and we don’t execute our assignment. I mean, it’s just self-inflicting, which falls on me. I’m the fault for this one.
What do you say to fans that have just pretty much thrown their hands up and given up?
Bray: Nothing. I talk to the team. My responsibility is to the players.
Do you not care what the fans think?
Bray: That’s not what I’m saying. Let’s not twist my words. My responsibility is to the team first, and that’s who I answer to.

What happened on those short yardage running plays?
Bray: We didn’t move the line of scrimmage. That was our issue last week. Fourth and oe, we’re not moving the line of scrimmage on short yardage plays.
Trent had a tremendous night tonight.
Bray: Trent’s always tremendous. He’s a great player.
You had a stretch in the second and third quarter where it seemed like every receiver was open. What happened during that stretch that just opened things up?
Bray: It really wasn’t anything different than the beginning of the game. We just hit them. And so again, we got to be ready to start fast, and we didn’t tonight, and it put us in a hole which is hard to dig out of.
Why isn’t Maalik Murphy going under center and running a quarterback sneak in some of those short yardage situations?
Bray: Same thing. The ability to take the ball under center.
Is his hand still a factor?
Bray: It still is.
