Oregon running back Makhi Hughes asks to redshirt

EUGENE — One of the most prominent transfers to Oregon this offseason is choosing to redshirt.

Makhi Hughes, who transferred to UO from Tulane, asked to redshirt and Oregon is honoring that request, Dan Lanning announced Wednesday.

A preseason AP All-American, Hughes he rushed for 1,401 yards and 15 touchdowns and had 19 catches for 176 yards and two scores last season. He had 1,378 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in 2023.

But Hughes was buried on Oregon’s depth chart and was either the fourth or fifth running back each game in the seven-deep group. He did not travel with the Ducks to Penn State and had just 17 carries for 70 yards and two catches for 24 yards in the first four games of this season.

“Makhi’s continuing to grow and learn and find his way in this room,” running backs coach Ra’Shaad Samples said in a radio interview prior to the Penn State game. ”Makhi’s attitude day in and day out, so mature.”

Hughes missed 2022 season due to injury, making it possible for him to receive a medical hardship waiver for that season and still have a redshirt available for this season.

Hughes is the brother of Oregon cornerback Na’eem Offord, who has played in all five games as a true freshman.

No. 2 Oregon (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) vs. No. 8 Indiana (5-0, 2-0)
