Sucker Punch’s long-awaited sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei, arrives either later today or tomorrow, depending on your region, and you may want to know exactly when.
This is actually one of the easier charts to write, given that this is just on one console with no PC release, a rarity in many ways these days, and there’s just one blanket international time. We have:
Wednesday, October 1:
Thursday, October 2
- 12 AM EDT
- International: 12 AM (midnight local time)
Easy enough then. As ever, I am in the “stay up until midnight” group on the East Coast here, which I will not be doing as I am no longer 22 and have kids who will be up five hours later, if not sooner. But I will carve out some time over the next week to play to be certain.
Ghost of Yotei arrives five years after Ghost of Tsushima, which was my GOTY for 2020, so needless to say, I’ve been looking forward to this return. The embargo lifted a few days ago, and Yotei has gotten an 87 score, a jump from the (way too low) 83 that Tsushima had. But in a competitive year, that barely puts it inside the top 10 highest-scored games of the year.
Yotei will continue to test Sony’s ongoing philosophy of single-platform releases. Exclusivity has always been the norm, but in recent years, things have changed, and Sony sometimes feels constrained by its hardware, hence its branching out into live services on more platforms. But for a game like Yotei, it’s arriving on PS5. That’s it. No Xbox-style cross launch, no simultaneous Helldivers-style PC launch and no PS4 backward compatibility. Just PS5. I mean, works for me, a PS5 owner, but these expensive, single-player games, though what Sony does well, seems to be something they want to expand beyond.
If you’re eager to play Yotei, you can already download the game now on PS5. I am currently doing this as we speak (in addition to catching up on several system updates) and it’s 85 GB in total. I’ve seen worse.
I will have some thoughts on Ghost of Yotei over the course of this weekend, depending on how much I’m able to play. I’ve been waiting five years for this, so I definitely want to take my time.
