Paramount+ has confirmed a Season 3 renewal for Taylor Sheridan’s espionage thriller Lioness, starring and executive produced by Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman. The long-awaited formal renewal comes 10 months after Season 2 of the drama series ended its run on the streamer after just 12.5 months between the Season 1 finale and Season 2 premiere.
As Deadline has reported, the Season 3 delay stemmed in part from the fact that, while Saldaña already had an acting deal in place spanning three seasons, Kidman had to make a new one for Season 3, which took awhile. It closed earlier this year when Season 3 was quietly greenlighted but not announced as producers had to work around its two stars’ busy film schedules. The long gap between Seasons 2 and 3 saw Saldaña join Kidman in the Oscar winner ranks for her performance in Emilia Pérez.
Word of Lioness getting a third season got out in August when a new production campus in Fort Worth Texas’ AllianceTexas development was officially unveiled as a partnership between SGS Studios, Sheridan’s company with 101 Studios CEO David Glasser; Paramount Television and Hillwood, a Perot Company.
Glasser, whose 101 Studios co-produces all Sheridan series alongside Paramount TV Studios, revealed at the time that four shows were slated to film on the lot this year, starting with Landman Season 2, followed by The Madison Season 2 and Lioness Season 3, slated for an October start.
In season 2, the CIA’s fight against terror moved closer to home. Joe (Saldaña), Kaitlyn (Kidman), and Byron (Michael Kelly) enlisted a new Lioness operative to infiltrate a previously unknown threat. With pressure mounting from all sides, Joe was forced to confront the profound personal sacrifices she made as the leader of the Lioness program.
In addition to Saldaña and Kidman, the second season starred fellow Oscar winner Morgan Freeman, Michael Kelly, Laysla De Oliveira, Genesis Rodriguez, Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Austin Hébert, Jonah Wharton, Thad Luckinbill and Hannah Love Lanier. Kidman received a Best Supporting Actress Critics Choice Award nomination for her performance in the season.
Lioness Season 2 was executive produced by Sheridan, Glasser, Saldaña, Kidman, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Jill Wagner, David Lemanowicz, Geyer Kosinski, Michael Friedman and Keith Cox.
