Sam Neill’s 81% Fresh Ozark Replacement Show Is the Latest Netflix Thriller to Top the Global Streaming Charts (After Just 1 Day)

Ozark is one of Netflix‘s most successful TV shows, and the crime drama received praise for its moral ambiguity, bleak atmosphere, and adrenaline-inducing decisions that led to terrifying results. Since its conclusion, the streamer has constantly tried to offer some replacements, and the latest one is Untamed.

The new release is a murder mystery drama starring Jurassic World‘s Sam Neill and Troy‘s Eric Bana and is set in the Yosemite National Park. Untamed, which is a six-part limited series, follows Agent Kyle Turner (Bana) as he investigates a brutal death in the park. The series debuted with positive reactions and has instantly become a hit on streaming. After its release on Jul. 17, Untamed didn’t waste any time and headed straight to the top of the charts, according to FlixPatrol.

The movie just debuted, and it quietly made its way up the charts.

On Jul. 18, Untamed was the No. 1 title in 77 countries where Netflix is streaming. It automatically became the biggest TV show in the U.S. as well. On Jul. 19, the number further grew, with Untamed topping the charts in 82 countries, and reaching the first five spots in the rest of them, as well. The limited series went ahead of the newly released docuseries Amy Bradley Is Missing, the popular Sullivan’s Crossing, which has just received a renewal, Dan Da Dan, and Squid Game in fifth place.

Untamed received positive reviews and debuted with a Certified Fresh 81% approval score from the critics and 88% from the audience. As more reviews came in, the series’ score changed to a 78% rating from the critics, still maintaining its Certified Fresh score, and 80% from the audience.

The new entry in the popular franchise debuted with abysmal scores.

Untamed comes from American Primeval creator Mark L. Smith, who co-created and co-wrote it with Elle Smith, and both acted as showrunners. Aside from Bana and Neill, the murder mystery drama also starred Rosemarie DeWitt as Bana’s character’s ex-wife, Lily Santiago as Naya Vasquez, a rookie National Park Service ranger, and Wilson Bethel as Shane Maguire, the wildlife management officer at Yosemite.

Can Untamed Get Season 2?

Speaking to TV Insider about Untamed Season 2, star and executive producer Eric Bana revealed he hasn’t entertained the idea yet. “I haven’t given too much thought to this, to be honest. It was so encompassing, but obviously we knew that the nature of his job is that these ISB agents do get moved around from park to park, which is why the ending is the way that it is because that is a very feasible thing and it was part of the story structure.”

The actor continued, “So yeah, I guess it’s always possible, but it wasn’t something that we structurally played with whilst putting these episodes together.”

Co-showrunner Elle Smith shared, “Oh, we would do this forever if they let us, but we’ll see. We’ll see how many adventures Turner has left in him.” She further teased that ISB agents go to different national parks, adding, “So I think that’s what was interesting to us, and if we got the opportunity to do it again, it would be getting to explore a different park, a different case.” Lily Santiago, who played Naya Vasquez, shared, “I 100% would do another season. I am hoping for it.” So far, Netflix hasn’t weighed in on Untamed‘s future.

Untamed is streaming on Netflix.
