BOSTON — Manager Alex Cora announced that righty Brayan Bello will start for the Red Sox against the Yankees in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series on Wednesday.
Cora had already named ace Garrett Crochet the Game 1 starter.
The rivals will play a best-of-three series Tuesday-Thursday with each game scheduled to start at 6:08 p.m. It is likely righty Lucas Giolito would start Game 3, if necessary.
The 26-year-old Bello is 5-3 with a 2.35 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 11 career starts (65 innings) against the Yankees. He’s 3-1 with a 1.44 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in five career starts (31 ⅓ innings) at Yankee Stadium. He also has held the Yankees to a .196 batting average in those five road starts.
Bello is 2-1 with a 1.89 ERA in three starts (19 innings) vs. New York this year. He won his only start at Yankee Stadium this regular season, firing 7 scoreless innings and allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out five on Aug. 22.
The Red Sox are the No. 5 seed while the Yankees are the No. 4 seed.
