Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will be coming to Xbox Series X and S on January 22nd, 2026, with pre-orders now available on the Xbox Store (including the original FF7 as a pre-order bonus!).
Ahead of its release, Windows Central has been talking to Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi about a variety of topics, including his experiences working with the lower-spec Xbox Series S compared to Series X and PS5.
In his response, Hamaguchi praised the Series S’s “solid” hardware, and advised that most of its development challenges have been “memory related” – something we’ve heard from other developers in the past as well.
“In terms of hardware specs, I would say the Xbox Series S is actually quite solid in terms of spec. We didn’t come across much of a processing challenge, but many of the challenges were more memory related.
Optimization is something we were strongly cognizant of as we worked on the PC version as well. For Final Fantasy 7 Remake, we took some of the philosophies found in Nanite for Unreal Engine 5 and created our own solution for Unreal Engine 4. We were successful in delivering stable graphics there, and gain Steam Deck verification as well. We have been pretty proud of what we were able to achieve, even on lower spec systems.”
Beyond this, Hamaguchi reiterated that Square Enix is taking a multi-platform approach to releases these days, meaning there’s a conscious effort to bring more of the company’s titles over to Xbox.
He also told Windows Central that he’s “definitely an Xbox fan” and that he’s going to “do my best to make sure that Square Enix can continue to reach a wider audience, including Xbox”.
Of course, it’s not just Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade that we can look forward to, as both Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and the third part of the trilogy have also been confirmed for Xbox. Don’t forget about next week’s release of Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles either, as that game’s been getting amazing reviews already!
