Atlético Madrid 5-2 Real Madrid (Mbappé & Güler). Defeat in the derby… This is an immediate reaction the big loss. More content: Player ratings, post match interviews and a derby podcast.
Real Madrid continued to top La Liga after winning every game so far, but the first real test of the season had arrived in the shape of Atlético Madrid. Jude Bellingham would be back in the line-up for the Madrid-derby, joined by the usual suspects. Dani Carvajal captained the team today.
The first half would be particularly busy, with Atlético taking an early lead through Robin Le Normand. Real Madrid would react well and draw level through Kylian Mbappé on the swivel – before Arda Güler gave them the lead with a great first time finish off of a Vinícius Júnior cross. Atlético then responded well, and hit the post before having a goal disallowed for handball. They would be level by half-time though, as Alexander Sørloth headed past Thibaut Courtois to make it 1-1 at the break.
The late first-half form by the home side would prove to be the tipping point, as Atlético had a penalty early on in the second half, which was converted by Julian Álvarez. They then had the next two chances, before Álvarez scored the best goal of the game to add a fourth. Real Madrid had backed down, offering little more than wishful penalty shouts. In fact, the home side even secured a fifth before the final whistle, with Antoine Griezmann capping off an awful night for Real.
