It is no secret that Prince William has been facing a lot of challenges over the last 18 months. His wife, Kate Middleton, announced her cancer diagnosis after weeks of speculation about her absence from public life. Then, King Charles announced his own cancer diagnosis. Amid all of that, William and Prince Harry still can’t seem to sort out their differences. While the heir to the throne has kept mostly mum about this tumultuous period, it’s clearly a big story, and his perspective would be a huge get for any journalist. So who’s the lucky interviewer who got Will to finally open up? Why, none other than Canadian comedian Eugene Levy, of course.
Levy hosts The Reluctant Traveler, a travel show on Apple TV+ currently in its third season. Who knew? Well, Prince William, apparently. For an upcoming episode where Levy goes to the U.K., he managed to score a sit-down with the prince. A preview clip of the episode, which comes out October 3, shows the Schitt’s Creek star making his way to Windsor Castle, where he’s greeted by William on a motorized scooter.
After some lighthearted banter and a personalized castle tour, the men sit down in a pub. “I’d say 2024 was the hardest year I’ve ever had,” William tells Levy. “You know, life is sent to test us, as well. And being able to overcome that is what makes us who we are.”
William gave a version of this quote last November when he told reporters in South Africa that 2024 had been “dreadful” and “the hardest year in my life.” So his conversation with Levy is not technically new information, but it’s the first time William has sat down in an intimate setting to really open up about what he’s gone through. Surely, all of the U.K.’s many, many TV reporters and presenters have been jockeying for this interview for months. Why is Levy the one who scored it? Is William the world’s biggest American Pie fan?
The most obvious explanation is that William, like his sister-in-law, is getting into the lifestyle-content game. Doing an episode of a random show for one of the quieter streaming services is a great way to get his foot in the door. Now there will be some connective tissue when he pops out next year with his own Apple TV+ series about making scones for your houseguests. Things are starting to make sense.
Besides, it’s not like he could call up Oprah. That would be kind of awkward.
