FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — The United States enters Day 2 of the 2025 Ryder Cup in an uncomfortable and uncommon position: trailing on its own soil. Europe enters Saturday holding a lead stateside for the first time in more than two decades with American captain Keegan Bradley scratching his head trying to figure out how he can possibly put the hosts in position to mount a significant comeback and put the event up for grabs come singles action Sunday.
While the United States entered as slim -150 favorites, it now stands as underdogs to Europe, which is -165 to win the trophy outright while entering Saturday holding a 3-point lead (5.5 to 2.5) ahead of the second set of eight matches at the Ryder Cup. The Americans need to win 12 of the remaining 20 points to grab the trophy, and while they can make a charge, odds are clearly against them doing so.
While many are at fault for the United States’ woes, the powerful duo of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and de facto flag bearer Bryson DeChambeau are likely most to blame. Two of the top dogs on the American side went a combined 0-4-0 on the first day of competition whereas Europe’s power players of Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood and Rory McIlroy were blemish-free in their efforts.
The festivities continue Saturday with foursomes, an alternate-shot competition where one American and one European golfer will tee off on the odd holes with their teammates teeing off on the even holes. (Check out CBS Sports’ breakdown of how those matches set up to begin play in New York.) Fourballs (best ball) will be played in the afternoon with different pairings being chosen by Bradley and fellow captain Luke Donald, so there will be plenty of golf to follow from morning until night.
