BETHPAGE, N.Y. — The pageantry, practice rounds, prognosticating and performative gestures are officially in the rear-view window with the 2025 Ryder Cup underway Friday at Bethpage Black. The United States is looking to regain the trophy while preventing Europe from becoming the first team to win a road Ryder Cup in 13 years, and the Americans enter the event as slim -150 favorites considering the rosters are much closer in talent than they were both two and four years ago.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler directs the United States into battle, while the golfers whom CBS Sports has power ranked 2-4 in the field all come from Europe: Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood. While the U.S. is a bit deeper from top to bottom, its 12-man roster also features four rookies compared to just one suiting up for Europe.
The festivities begin Friday with foursomes, an alternate-shot competition where one American and one European golfer will tee off on the odd holes with their teammates teeing off on the even holes. (Check out CBS Sports’ breakdown of how those matches set up to begin play in New York.) Whichever side has emerged on top after Friday foursomes — often in dominant fashion — usually goes on to win the Ryder Cup, so it will be contentious from the start as the New York crowd will do whatever it can to get the Europeans off their games. Four-ball (best ball) action will be played in the afternoon with different pairings being chosen by captains Keegan Bradley and Luke Donald, so there will be plenty of golf to follow from morning until night.
