‘The Witcher’ Showrunner Finally Reveals the Real Reason Henry Cavill Exited the Netflix Fantasy Series

Henry Cavill making an unexpected exit from The Witcher is a subject that became a topic of debate among fans of the Netflix series for a long while. However, exactly why the former Superman star decided to leave the fantasy series after three seasons has been almost impossible to pin down, with some citing “creative differences” and others suggesting this amounted to Cavill not being happy with the direction the series was being taken compared to the source material – of which he is a huge fan. Now, showrunner Lauren Hissrich has shared a little more insight into Cavill’s decision.

Cavill’s fans were dealt a double blow when the actor announced he was leaving the role of Geralt and his return as Superman was shot down in flames. It seems, though, that Cavill already had his eyes on other roles away from Geralt, and that played a huge part in his exit. Hissrich told Entertainment Weekly:

“He had plans for other roles that he really wanted to commit himself to… and for us, you don’t want to hold someone and force them to be doing something that they don’t want to do. I think that’s why it felt like a really symbiotic decision.”

According to Hissrich, the discussion around recasting Geralt and first conversations with Liam Hemsworth about taking over the role “happened for a while” before the announcement.

“We all knew that a change was going to take place, and we were excited to think about what that change could be and, from my perspective, how that change could fit into story really well.”

Fans Have Still Not Warmed to Liam Hemsworth Joining ‘The Witcher’

There are some casting decisions that are incredibly pleasing to fans – Cavill playing Geralt – and some that continue to get negative reactions for months and even years after they are announced – Hemsworth’s replacement Geralt. From the moment it was confirmed that Cavill was out as Geralt and Hemsworth would be taking over the role, fans were not taking it lying down. A petition took very little time to break through 200,000 signatures demanding that Cavill be brought back for Season 4, and when it was revealed that Season 4 and Season 5 would bring the series to a close, many celebrated and declared that they would not watch either season.

Anyone who knows how this plays out will know that is not quite how this is going to go down. If those against the recasting do not watch the new episodes, they cannot dish out one-star ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, and that would never do. So it is likely that The Witcher Season 4 will debut with a record-breaking viewership for the series and will then feel the wrath of those who still cannot accept that sometimes things just don’t work out as they want in TV shows and movies.
