John Mateer required surgery this week after hurting his throwing hand in last weekend’s win over Auburn. Now, this afternoon, Oklahoma’s quarterback has shared a message to those in Norman.
Following his procedure on Wednesday, Mateer has taken to social media with an update on his recovery. He said the surgery went well, with him crediting Dr. Steven Shin of Cedars-Sinai Orthopaedics in Los Angeles.
“Thank God for a successful procedure. Dr. Shin is the GOAT. BOOMER SOONER!!” Mateer tweeted out a day post-op on Thursday.
Oklahoma announced on Tuesday that Mateer had this injury and would be in need of surgery this week. That’s after he broke a bone in his right hand in the first quarter of the 24-17 win for OU over Auburn on Saturday.
Following this surgery, Mateer is expected to be back on the field in around a month or so. That isn’t too significant early with the Sooners having a bye week this weekend before playing Kent State, one of the worst teams the past three years in the FBS, on October 4th.
However, from there, Oklahoma begins a seven-game conference stretch over eight weeks with six of those games being against ranked opponents. That includes Texas in the Red River Rivalry, at South Carolina, and Ole Miss in October before playing at Tennessee and Alabama and against Missouri and LSU in November.
Through a 4-0 start to the season for No. 7 Oklahoma, Mateer had been all the Sooners expected him to be, if not more, when they got him out of the NCAA Transfer Portal. He was 95-141 (67.4%) for 1,215 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions, while also rushing for 190 yards and five more scores. That has him averaging 351.3 yards per game himself with 11 total touchdowns scored and four turnovers.
With that, Mateer was playing like one of the best in college football, with him contending for the Heisman Trophy and OU proving itself to be in contention both in the SEC and for the CFP. But, with this news, all of that has come into question or doubt pending a crucial rehab period for the Sooners’ quarterback.
The most important thing is that the initial surgery was a success yesterday in LA. Now, OU will be hoping for a good, speedy recovery for Mateer, whether in the best-case scenario in two weeks in time for Red River in Dallas, or in general sometime in October.
