Well here we are again! Sony’s returned with another PlayStation State of Play showcase, this one of an autumnal hue, meaning a fresh parade of announcements for things you’ll be playing on your PS5 soon, soonish, and decidedly less soon.
Official pre-show chatter confirmed we should expect a first in-depth look at Returnal studio Housemarque’s latest PlayStation exclusive Saros, while rumblings elsewhere suggested a release date reveal for Nioh 3. But with proceedings now over, here’s everything actually revealed during the show.
Saros gets first gameplay and a release date
And speaking of Housemarque’s Returnal follow-up, Saros is precisely where Sony decided to start its latest showcase, offering a first gameplay look at what the studio is calling an “emotional and haunting story” set on the shape-sharing planet of Carcosa. This first proper taste of Saros spotlighted several of protagonist Arjun Devraj’s abilities, including his Soltari Shield – capable of defending and absorbing projectiles – and his Power Weapon, used to blast back those absorbed projectiles. Along his journey, Devraj can probe Hololog’s to learn more about the planet, but mostly the focus appears to be on the kind of eye-searing action that made Returnal so compelling. Saros arrives on 20th March next year, along with PS5 Pro enhancements, and Housemarque says it’ll be sharing more in the months leading up to its release.
ZA/UM’s Zero Parades: For Dead Spies returns
ZA/UM – or at least what’s left of the studio behind the highly acclaimed Disco Elysium after countless controversies and staff departures – popped up with another trailer for Zero Parades: For Dead Spies. Previous showing have described it as an espionage RPG in which players – as one Hershel Wilk – must make acquaintances with various useful people at the end of history. It’s got a visual style very reminiscent of Disco Elysium, and it’s out next year.
Microsoft Flight Simulator finally confirmed for PS5
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has long been rumoured for release on PlayStation 5, but finally it’s official – and there’s a release date! Wannabe pilots looking to take to the skies for an aeronautical jaunt across Flight Simulator’s sumptuous 1:1 digital recreation of earth can do just that when it launches for Sony’s console on 8th December this year. A trailer!
Battlefield 6 gets a new campaign mode trailer
Battlefield 6‘s imminent arrival is hardly a surprise – EA’s heavy pre-launch promotion has made sure of that – but even if it’s already on your radar, you might like this briefest of new looks. EA’s latest Battlefield 6 trailer teases a little more of its campaign mode, and if that’s sufficiently whetted your appetite, the full game releases for PS5 on 10th October.
Legendary immersive sim Deus Ex is getting a remaster
Deux Ex – the classic cyberpunk immersive sim from developer Ion Storm and designer Warren Spector – is 25 this year, and it’s celebrating the occasion with a brand-new remaster, courtesy of Aspyr. There’s talk of updated controls, new lighting, dynamic shadows, particle systems, and upscaled textures – alongside the likes of rebuilt character models, lip-synced dialogue, and ragdoll physics. However, Aspyr is calling this a ‘careful modernisation’ intended to preserve the original’s DNA. We’ll find out what that looks like on 5th February next year.
Halloween gameplay reveal and release date
At this rate, there’ll be no horror movie classics left untouched by the asymmetrical schtick stick. This time, it’s the turn of John Carpenter’s seminal slasher Halloween, which – like Friday the 13th: The Game, Killer Klowns from Outer Space: The Game, and Predator Hunting Grounds before it – is getting the 1v4 asymmetrical multiplayer treatment (a single-player mode is also promised) as horror icon Michael Myers pursues the residents of Haddonfield. We already knew it was coming thanks to last month’s announcement, but there’s some first gameplay in the trailer below. And if you like what you see, Halloween launches next year on 8th September.
Fantasy ARPG Lost Epoch is on its way to PS5
Last Epoch – the rather middling fantasy action-RPG that’s now owned by Krafton after it acquired developer Eleventh Hour Games earlier this year – is coming to PlayStation 5. You can put away your diaries seeing as there’s no release date yet, but we do know it’ll launch alongside its first major expansion, Oryboss. This, if you’re curious, promises “genre-defining skill customisation, a deep rewarding loot system, and all previous seasonal content.”
The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin bringing open-world anime action to PS5
If you’re in the mood for a bit of anime-inspired adventure, The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin is making its way to PS5. Its free-to-play open-world RPG action follows the tribulations of protagonist Tristan as he explores (along with some friends, if you like) the “vibrant multiverse” of Britannia. There’s talk of real-time combat, hidden secrets, and familiar faces – all of which you’ll be able to experience when it comes to PS5 on 28th January next year.
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds shows off its Mega Man DLC pack
Another challenger for the kart racing crown, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, is almost upon us. And ahead of its PS4 and PS5 arrival on 25th September, Sega has provided a glimpse of its upcoming Mega Man crossover DLC. It features Mega Man and Proto Man in their respective vehicles, alongside a new track reimagining Dr. Wily’s castle. And if that’s the kind of nostalgia-tweaking treat you’ve been waiting for, the DLC launches next year.
Nioh 3 gets a February 2026 release date
Alright, so Amazon’s recent leak kind of spoiled this particular reveal, but it’s good to see Nioh 3 and its confirmed release date all the same. The latest entry in Team Ninja’s celebrated action-RPG series – which sees protagonist Tokugawa Takechiyo battling his brother through time – launches for PS5 on 6th February next year. And there’s a new trailer to accompany the news.
Dynasty Warriors 3 is getting a remaster
Omega Force’s 2001 hack-and-slasher Dynasty Warriors 3 – in which players tear their way through thousands-strong armies somewhere in Three Kingdoms-era ancient China – is getting a modern-day makeover. It’s been rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 to get those snazzier visuals, and it also includes everything from Dynasty Warriors 3’s standalone expansion Xtreme Legends. Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered – which very much does what it says on the label – comes to PS5 19th March next year.
CodeVein 2 release date revealed
Bandai Namco’s 2019 anime action-RPG CodeVein is getting the sequel treatment, sensibly titled CodeVein 2. That much we already knew, but Sony’s latest State of Play showcase has now given us a release date to shove in the diary. This time around, you’re on a mission to rewrite fate, accompanied by a mysterious girl named Lou who “holds the power to transcend time itself”. And it’s all kicking off from 30th January next year.
Let It Die gets a sequel this December
After a quick reminder of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles’ imminent PS5 release on 30th September, it was onto Let It Die: Inferno, the official sequel to Grasshopper Manufacture’s 2016 hack-and-slash oddity Let It Die. The wonderfully garish Inferno combines melee action, rogue-lite elements, and PvPvE as players take on the role of Raiders and explore the depths of hell. There’s an extraction element, meaning you’ll need to get out alive each time if you want to hang onto your spoils (and, er, your body) – and if that appeals, it’s coming to PlayStation 5 on 3rd December this year.
Chronoscript: The Endless End unveiled
It takes a brave sort to be releasing a side-scrolling Metroidvania in the shadow of Silksong, but Chronoscript: The Endless End seems game. Officially described as an “exploration-based 2D action-adventure”, Chronoscript is set in the distant future of 2026, when an editor – holed up in a remote manor – is bitten by a mosquito and cast into the pages of a manuscript. For all the Silksong jokes, Chronoscript actually looks extremely neat, with a smashing handdrawn art style and a unique twist that sees it sprawling across both the manuscript’s 2D pages and the 3D mansion in which they reside. It definitely look like one to watch and it’s out next year.
Crimson Desert launches next March
A quick heads-up: after using this laptop for something like 13 years, I’ve just this very moment managed wear its ‘S’ key pretty much down to the membrane, and it’s all gone a bit haywire. So if you see any missing Ses from this point onward (I really am having to hammer it quite hard) apologies. Anyway, open-world action-adventure Crimson Desert – which follows some guy with a beard and a big shield – comes to PS5 on 19th March next year.
Introducing Sony’s Pulse Elevate wireless speakers
It’s peripheral time, with Sony having unveiled its new Pulse Elevate wireless speaker line-up. The short version is they promise “ultra-low latency, lifelike gaming audio, and a built-in mic”, all designed to work with PS5, PC, and Mac. They come in black or white, feature a rechargeable battery (meaning they’re technically portable), and are set to launch sometime next year.
God of War is getting a limited edition 20th anniversary controller
While you might well hope Sony has more planned for the 20th anniversary of one of its biggest series than just this limited edition God of War DualSense controller, it’s all we’re getting for now. It’s white with a red stripe down one side, and if you squint a bit it sort of looks like Kratos with two giant analogue stick eyes and a tiny LED mouth. That probably wasn’t what Sony was going for, however. It costs £74.99/€84.99/$84.99 and releases in select country on 23rd October. Pre-orders, if you’re eager enough, start on 3rd October.
At long last, Insomniac’s Wolverine revealed
It’s been a long time coming, but four year after its announcement, Insomniac’s Wolverine game has had its grand unveiling. It’s promising to be both “violent and visceral” – the plentiful claws-though-faces shots really helped underscore that – and while today’s showing was a little light on actual gaming, we got an action-packed new trailer plus a bunch of behind-the-scenes chatter from the cast and development team. A more substantial showing is promised for “spring” 2026, with the game itself now due for release on PlayStation 5 next year. And with that, we’re done for another State of Play – cheerio!
